Gemini 4 Argon is Google’s new Gemini model for complex software engineering, enterprise knowledge work, and cyber defense, with up to 1M output tokens per response. Google is still opening its own API in stages, but on LaoZhang API a default-group key calls it now, with no Google account or early-access request.

Key facts

Pricing

These rates come from LaoZhang API’s public pricing as of October 14, 2026, in US dollars per 1M tokens:
  • Google’s announcement says the price rises to $4 input and $20 output after the launch period, without giving an end date. LaoZhang API will post an announcement when its price changes.
  • Thinking tokens are billed at the output rate. For example, a request with 53 input tokens, 6 answer tokens, and 832 thinking tokens is billed for 838 output tokens, about $0.0085.
  • For current rates, see the model and pricing catalog and the console pricing page.

Call Gemini 4 Argon

Create an API key in Token management in the default group, with its billing mode set to Usage first (按量优先, recommended) or Usage-based (按量计费). Then export the key in your terminal:
  • In the OpenAI-compatible response, the reply is in choices[0].message.content. In the Gemini-native response, it’s in candidates[0].content.parts[].text.
  • Token usage and the charge for each request are in call logs.
  • For images, streaming, and multi-turn requests in the native format, see the Gemini protocol.

Thinking levels

  • On the Gemini-native endpoint, minimal returns a 400.
  • On the OpenAI-compatible endpoint, none returns an error that asks for a thinking level instead. Use low when you don’t need deep reasoning.
  • Higher levels produce more thinking tokens, so they cost more and take longer.

Who is affected

  • Affected: projects that call Gemini through LaoZhang API for complex coding, long-document analysis, or multi-step reasoning. An API key in the default group with the Usage first or Usage-based billing mode can call it.
  • Not affected: existing models. gemini-3.8-flash and the other Gemini models remain available, and current integrations need no changes.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a Google account or early access?

No. Google is opening its own API in stages, but gemini-4-argon is already available on LaoZhang API. Use your LaoZhang API key and base URL.

Will the price change after the launch period?

Google lists $4 input and $20 output per 1M tokens after the launch period, but hasn’t said when the period ends. LaoZhang API will post any price change in announcements, and call logs show the actual charge.

Should I use Gemini 4 Argon or Gemini 3.8 Flash?

Try gemini-4-argon first for complex coding, long reasoning chains, and tasks that need very long output. Try gemini-3.8-flash first for high-volume, cost-sensitive work ($0.75 input and $3.75 output per 1M tokens). Compare quality, latency, and token usage on your own requests before you go live.

Why do minimal and none return an error?

Gemini 4 Argon accepts only three thinking levels: low, medium, and high. Send low when you don’t need deep reasoning.

What if a long request times out?

Gemini 4 Argon can write very long responses, and higher thinking levels take longer. Stream long responses and give your client a long enough timeout:
  • OpenAI-compatible endpoint: add "stream": true to the request.
  • Gemini-native endpoint: switch to streamGenerateContent?alt=sse.
